In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky, a cousin of Lazare Kaplan, developed a complex mathematical formula for cutting a diamond to its precise angles and proportions. To Lazare Kaplan, the formula came to define the "ideal-cut" which maximizes a diamond’s beauty. There is no denying that other diamond cutters have applied the formula to produce ideal-cut diamonds, but only LAZARE Diamonds® are cut consistently to the highest and most stringent standard without exception. Only 1% to 2% of LKI production meets the quality and uncompromising ideal-cut standards deserving of LAZARE Diamonds®.

Every LAZARE® diamond is ideal-cut. When a diamond is ideally cut, light rays from all sides are bent towards the center of the diamond and are reflected back through the top in a blaze of light. If a diamond is not ideally cut, light will “leak out” through the sides or bottom of the diamond. The ideal-cut guarantees you a spectacular balance of brilliance, scintillation and fire.
